Frames and Glass
Vinyl, fiberglass or wood?
Vinyl is the low-upkeep default for brick and siding homes. Fiberglass is stiffer and handles dark colors. Wood suits older houses where the look matters and needs finishing. Start with vinyl windows.
What do U-factor and SHGC mean?
U-factor is how fast heat escapes through the whole window; SHGC is how much sunlight becomes heat inside. In Knoxville's mixed-humid climate both matter. Read energy-efficient windows.
Why is there fog between my panes?
The edge seal has failed and moist air got in. The sealed glass unit can often be replaced alone; see window glass replacement.
Where is tempered glass required?
In doors, glass near doors, large low panes near walkways, and glass near tubs, showers, stairs and pools, per the residential code (2018 IRC R308.4).
Code, Permits and Historic Districts
What energy code applies to windows in Knoxville?
The City of Knoxville references the 2018 International Residential Code, which sets U-0.32 and SHGC 0.40 for climate zone 4. ENERGY STAR v7 sets tighter targets.
Do I need a permit?
Changing an opening's size, cutting a new one or adding a bay needs a permit. For same-size swaps, confirm with the City of Knoxville, Knox County Codes Administration or your town before work begins.
Can I replace windows in a historic overlay?
In Knoxville's H-1 districts, exterior work needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Zoning Commission before a permit, and the guidelines favor repairing original windows.
Does a new bedroom window have to meet egress size?
A replacement of the same style and the largest standard size that fits is exempt under the 2018 IRC. A changed style or new opening needs 5.7 sq ft net clear, 24 inches high, 20 inches wide and a sill no higher than 44 inches.
Hiring a Contractor
Who actually installs my windows?
An independent contractor. Knoxville Elite Windows is a referral service: we put you in touch, and the contractor contracts with you directly and is responsible for the work, permit, price and warranty.
What license should a window contractor have in Tennessee?
Jobs of $25,000 or more need a contractor license from the Board for Licensing Contractors. In Knox County, residential jobs of $3,000 to $24,999 need a Home Improvement license.
Can I cancel after signing?
If you sign at your home, the FTC Cooling-Off Rule generally gives you three business days to cancel a sale of $25 or more.
My house was built before 1978. Does that matter?
Yes. EPA rules always cover window replacement in pre-1978 housing, so the firm must be lead-safe (RRP) certified. See how window installation works.
