Sliding Glass and Patio Door Replacement in Knoxville

Knoxville Elite Windows passes patio door requests to the same independent installers who handle windows, since the work and the glass ratings overlap. If your slider drags, leaks at the sill or fogs between the panes, this page covers the choices and the costs.

Signs the door needs replacing

  • Rollers replaced already and the panel still drags, which points to a bent track or sagging frame.
  • Water on the floor after a heavy rain, often from a sill that was never pan-flashed.
  • Fog between the panes of the glass panels.
  • A lock that no longer lines up with the keeper.
  • Drafts you can feel along the interlock in January.

Glass and code

All glass in doors must be tempered or laminated under the 2018 IRC (R308.4). Glazed doors also carry U-factor and SHGC ratings like windows, and the same climate zone 4 targets apply. A low-e coating matters more on a patio door than on most windows because the glass area is so large.

Knoxville decks, porches and rain

A lot of Knoxville-area homes sit on slopes, with the patio door opening onto a raised wood deck. That changes the install:

  • Sill pan. With just under 52 inches of rain a year, a sloped sill pan under the new door is the most important detail. Ask for it by name.
  • Deck ledger. If the deck ledger is fastened right below the door, the flashing between them should be checked while the old door is out.
  • Threshold height. A new door may sit a little higher or lower; ask how the transition to the floor and deck will be handled.
  • Screens. Summer bugs are real here. Check how the screen panel rolls and locks.

Cost

Published national guides report most slider replacements falling between $1,000 and $7,500 (about $2,500 on average); a vinyl double-pane slider tends to run $1,500 to $3,000. Widening an opening for a larger door adds framing and a permit. These are national ranges; the cost guide has more on what drives local quotes.

Questions

Patio Door Replacement: What Homeowners Ask

What does a new sliding glass door usually run?

National guides put most replacements between about $1,000 and $7,500, averaging around $2,500. Vinyl double-pane sliders sit at the lower end.

Can I replace a slider with a French door in the same opening?

Often yes, though hinged doors need clear swing space. A sliding French door gives the look without the swing.

Why does my patio door leak at the bottom?

Usually a missing or failed sill pan, a clogged weep at the track, or the door frame sitting out of level. A replacement is the time to install a proper sill pan.

Does patio door glass have to be tempered?

Yes. All glass in doors must be safety glass under the residential code.
