Lake houses and view walls
The draw of living near Fort Loudoun Lake is the water view, and lake homes usually have a rear wall of glass to show it off. That glass faces open water with no shade, so solar gain and glare are the problems. Low-SHGC glass on west- and south-facing walls, compared in daylight samples so the view does not look dim, is the standard fix. Picture windows with operable side units give air without breaking the view.
Docks, decks and doors
Lake lots often have a walk-out level with a patio door to a deck or dock path. Patio door glass must be tempered, and the sill needs a proper pan in this wet climate. See sliding glass door replacement.
The original grid town
Lenoir City's older quadrants west of Town Creek and north of the railroad hold homes from the town's early decades. Some still have original wood windows. Inspect them before deciding: sound sashes can be restored and fitted with storm windows; rotted ones are better replaced with units that keep similar proportions.
Loudon County rules
Loudon County is not on Tennessee's Home Improvement license list, so only jobs of $25,000 or more require a state contractor license. Contact the City of Lenoir City (or Loudon County outside city limits) to confirm permit needs, and expect a permit when an opening is enlarged.
