The company-town neighborhoods
Alcoa's first sections, Vose and Springbrook to the north and Bassel and Hall to the south, were planned by the company's engineers along with about 150 houses in the first phase. By 1920 the town had about 700 houses. Many of those early homes have been re-sided and re-windowed over the decades, often more than once.
- Measure carefully: older openings are rarely perfectly square, so a full-frame replacement may fit better than an insert.
- Check for empty sash-weight pockets and insulate them during replacement.
- Houses from before 1978 fall under the EPA lead-safe rule for window work.
Living near McGhee Tyson Airport
McGhee Tyson Airport sits in Blount County next to Alcoa. If aircraft noise is the reason you are replacing windows, tell the installer up front. Glass with different pane thicknesses, laminated glass and tighter-sealing styles such as casements reduce sound more than standard double-pane units. Ask for the window's sound rating if the manufacturer publishes one.
Newer homes along the parkway
Pellissippi Parkway (I-140) ties Alcoa to west Knoxville and Oak Ridge, and newer subdivisions and townhomes have filled in along it. Those homes typically need fogged-glass repair or a like-for-like swap rather than a redesign. See double-pane windows for the repair-or-replace call.
Permits and licensing
Inside city limits, check with the City of Alcoa; outside them, Blount County. Confirm whether your job needs a permit before work starts, and expect one if an opening is enlarged. Blount County is not on Tennessee's Home Improvement license list, but any job of $25,000 or more needs a state contractor license.
